It had been a couple weeks since Alaric set out towards Aydindril. He had sent a number of heralds ahead of them to sing his praises. He moved slowly to give them time. He knew winning the people was key.
The peoples palace was still plagued by the rouge Mord' Sith. But he had faith in his generals. They would hunt down and kill them in his absence. He hated leaving this to others, but the Midlands were to important. With the disappearance of the Mother Confessor they would be looking for solid leadership. He would fill that void.
He received messages from the old world daily. Rumors said the emperor was dead. That his queen had taken control. Were these just rumors or was it the truth. Either way he knew they would be looking toward D'Hara soon enough. He was going to be ready. A united new world would be the only way to stand a chance. This is was the reason he betrayed Rahl, this was his destiny.
He rode with a small force, 30k men. Well maybe not small but not enough to cause pure panic, enough to show his strength. To instill some fear of him but not enough to force them to deny him out of principal or threat of being conquered. Alaric knew fear was the key here. Many rulers wanted to be loved. But love can be forgotten for opportunity. Fear, that was the key. Give them enough so that they don't hate you but not enough so as they don't need you. Show them strength and resolve. Show them that you could provide for them, offer them a better life. Protect them from what they fear. But show you will handle rebellion with a firm hand. This was the key to power.
