Deneric Rahl of D'Hara is kept busy by a force of D'Harans, "The Free People's of D'Hara," who do not wish to be under his rule and are trying to overthrow him.
In the Midlands, a group of renegade Confessors, most with the gift, have begun striking out against the Mother Confessor, Adela Amnell, who is in turn struggling to contain them.
Westland has joined with the Midlands in an alliance to defend against the Old World, although the alliance is a shaky one due to the resentment of magic harbored by most Westlanders.
In the Old World, there is much infighting despite their attempts to take over the New World. Many kingdoms farther back in ignore the war altogether and focus instead on stealing the lands of their neighbors, who have sent all their forces north.
